Aren’t barns great? They are extremely versatile, allowing you to house your horses, cattle, and other livestock, as well as grain, hay, equipment, and more, all while protecting them from the elements like heavy winds and rain. There seems to be no end to the benefits of barns or shops, but in order to hold onto these advantages, it’s important to take care of your barn.

Our Top Three Tips for Protecting Barns

Here are our top three tips that will help you protect your barn:

  1. Control pests- Pests are one of the worst nuisances you may have to deal with if you have a shop. Rodents will chew on your barn’s walls, beams, and doors, so make sure you prevent them however you can. Don’t leave supplies and equipment lying around, or pests may take cover underneath it. In addition, harmful insects may be a threat to your barn. Termites, for instance, will feed on the wood. Other insects can cause structural damage as well, and they may be a health threat to any animals you have inside. Take preventative measures and call for pest control services when necessary.
  2. Check for water damage- Moisture is never great for barns or really any structure because it can cause wood root or expensive structural damage. To make sure your barn is in good shape, you can periodically check your roof and foundation for mold, cracks, or discoloration.
  3. Keep it ventilated- Ventilation is especially important if you have animals in your barn, but it can also be helpful for reducing moisture. This will prevent mold and mildew growth that could damage your barn severely.
